Mom & Caregiver CoachHelping you discover hope and real solutions for your behaviorally challenged child! Parenting with Empathy.
Hi, I’m Kim! I am so glad you’re here.
Out of the Box Kids is a place for moms and caregivers of kids with challenging behaviors. Here you will find hope and real solutions for their behaviors and know that you are not alone in the world.
My Story
My name is Kim. I’m a wife and mom to 3 beautiful kids. My oldest son, 23 yrs old, is a high achiever, easy going kind of kid. My middle child, a son, is 19 and on the Autism spectrum, and my youngest, a daughter, is 18 and diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder or FASD. We adopted her when she was 4 years old.
In my “spare” time, LOL!!! I love to read historical fiction, crochet and drink coffee!
My background is in nursing and my favorite was working Pediatrics Home Health for special needs kids. For over 25 years I loved my job, but found when my 2 youngest were in elementary school tha they really started to struggle in school and in life.
I needed and wanted to stay home with them.
When Kale (middle child) was 13 months old, I started to see signs that something wasn’t quite right. I was scared but didn’t know what to do.
He began having some very extreme behaviors, by the time he was 9 years old, he was having multiple meltdowns every day. I felt like such a horrible mom, like I was failing my son. Everything we did (all traditional methods) made his meltdowns and behaviors worse.
I was doing all the things research oriented, scouring the web, reading all the books, taking the advice of all the well meaning women with their wives tales of how to curb this horrendous behavior.
Nothing worked.
I felt so desperate, alone and full of shame in those days.
I finally found a parenting class called Collaborative Problem Solving by Dr. Ross Greene.
It was helping! It was working!
Over the years we have had such amazing results with this method that I have written my own curriculum and am passionate about teaching and helping parents and caregivers to have the same success we have had.
Four years ago, I started teaching parenting classes at the local community college for the Kinship and Foster program. I also taught these classes at Family SOUP, a local non profit family resource center for parents of special needs kids. I also offered parenting classes online, as well as offering help with all things IEP’s and 504’s.
Through being employed at the family resource center combined with my own journey of over 12 years with my special needs kiddos, I have extensive experience with special ed, IEP’s and 504’s and continue to offer support in these areas.
My Values & Beliefs
Kids want to do well.....
Spare the rod, spoil the child...?
Empathy is your key.
My Approach
By using a non-traditional method of respect for your child; teamwork and collaboration, unwanted behaviors decrease and the connection with your child grows stronger. These kids may be on the autism spectrum, have bipolar, ADHD, anxiety or depression, trauma or FASD. Or they may not have a diagnosis at all, but you know for dang sure that they have challenging and extreme behaviors.
It’s my passion to help moms and caregivers have a real connection with their challenging kids. Life should not be all about behaviors, fighting with your child and constantly disciplining them. My desire is for you to get to know who your child really is and strengthen your relationship.
I offer hope and real solutions to the challenging behaviors. Parenting with Empathy.
